New Zealand has stepped up its border security with the introduction of the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), a move designed to make travel smoother while enhancing security.

From 1 October 2019, some travellers can skip the visa process and use an NZeTA instead. Whether you qualify depends on your passport, how you’re travelling, and if you’re visiting or just passing through.

Who needs an ETA?

From 1 October 2019, the following travellers must have an NZeTA before heading to New Zealand:

  • All air travellers from 60 visa-waiver countries
  • All cruise travellers
  • Passengers transiting through New Zealand from a visa waiver or transit visa waiver country
  • Australian permanent residents need an NZeTA but are exempt from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)

Who is exempt?

The following travellers do not need an NZeTA:

  • Australian citizens
  • New Zealand citizens (travelling on a New Zealand passport)
  • Holders of valid New Zealand visas (resident or temporary)

Processing times vary, but it's best to allow at least 72 hours before departure. While some approvals are faster, applying well in advance helps avoid last-minute stress.

Do I need an NZeTA if I am transiting through Auckland International Airport?

You might need an NZeTA to transit via Auckland International Airport on your way to another country. Eligibility depends on your passport, so check with NZ Immigration to confirm before you travel.
